English: This eerie engraving of the fort of São João Baptista de Ajudá, Dahomey (now Benin) was published in the Portuguese magazine O Ocidente in 1886. With its high walls and gloomy aspect, it presents a somewhat imaginary view of the fort that does not correspond to 19th century descriptions by visitors and another more realistic engravings published in 1890. Le walls of the fort were about three meters high and made of mud mixed with clay.

O forte, uma antiga estação de comércio de escravos, permaneceu sob controle português até 1961, quando foi aproveitado pela recém-independente República do Dahomey (agora Benin). Publicado na revista portuguesa O Ocidente em 1886.}}
