New Milwaukee CSA

There is a new designation for the Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha CSA

CSA moves

I undid one of your moves, to change back to styling per MOS, New Orleans–Metairie–Hammond, LA–MS combined statistical area, before I noticed that you changed more than the styling. The new name is not consistent with the article contents; if you want it to be about the new CSA, it needs to have contents updated. And it needs a reference.

In general, the styling is a mess, with many articles having the spaced-en-dash styling that the MOS specified with two-word names before the summer 2011 revision of MOS:DASH. But moving back to hyphens and capitals is not a good fix. See MOS:CAPS and MOS:DASH. We don't generally copy the styling of lists, especially not copying capitalization from items listed like headings that are not really proper names. That is, there's no reason to capitalize combined statistical area. These are just generic terms. And we connect names of cities that remain separate entities with en dash, to avoid things like the ambiguity of the tightly connected "Rock-North" in Little Rock-North Little Rock, AR Combined Statistical Area, etc.

The Office of Management and Budget issued OMB Bulletin No. 13-01: Revised Delineations of Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Micropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas, and Guidance on Uses of the Delineations of These Areas on February 28, 2013. Since United States statistical areas have no meaning other than that defined by the OMB, I strongly feel that we should use the statistical area names exactly as defined by the OMB. If articles are about generic metropolitan areas, then they should not be given names that resemble official OMB statistical area names.

• It is my sad duty to inform you that the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area is no more. I'm sorry, but I was completely unaware that a new move discussion was begun on Talk:Statistical area. No one gave me a heads up, and I didn't bother to look for a discussion before I moved the article. I will be happy to move this article wherever consensus dictates. I think we have pretty much discussed these titles to death, and I'm not sure I will even bother to participate. With the new OMB definitions I have huge amounts of data to update. I continue to think that "statistical area" is a terrible name for the topic -- and that a better name could be created if we quit trying to treat the article like a dictionary definition and instead convert it into an article about the designation of "metro" areas in the U.S. Your thoughts on that matter would, of course, be helpful... What is the possibility of adding an option "This user grew up in ..."? I'd do it, but can't figure out how to do so. Probably should invoke same categories as "former resident of". StevenJ81 (talk) 19:49, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

The terms "grew up in", "was reared in", and "is from" are somewhat ambiguous. Do they mean:

1. "is a native of"
2. "is a native of, but no longer resides in"
3. "is a former resident of"

My meaning was: "is a former resident, but no longer resides ... and spent most of childhood in, but is not a native of (because was not born there)". It is the bit about "spent most of childhood in but not born there" that is missing from the current options. (I plan to use it in a State template, not the US template.) Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area

Your creation of redirects to invalid target reeks of POV and vandalism. I know that you have strong views on how the census bureau articles should be labeled, but redirecting into city articles is just wrong, especially where articles exist. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:38, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't understand your point. I'm attempting to work with 1098 U.S. statistical areas concurrently, and not everything gets done instantaneously, (nor always correctly the first time.) I will be happy to redirect any links you find inappropriate. We have hundreds of redlinks to resolve on the List of metropolitan areas of the United States. In the case of the Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area, there are numerous definitions of this urban area including two OMB defined statistical areas: the Birmingham-Hoover, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Birmingham-Hoover-Talladega, AL Combined Statistical Area. I believe the title "Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area" should link to either an article or article subsection about the metro area and its many definitions rather than arbitrarily to one of the two OMB definitions. Do you not agree?

It is my intent to create such an article or article subsection for each of the 1098 U.S. statistical areas. I am a still-more-than-fully-employed senior citizen, so I get these done a rapidly as I can.  Buaidh  19:48, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

The Winona, Minnesota micropolitan area is included in the List of metropolitan areas of the United States. The United States Office of Management and Budget has designated Winona County, Minnesota as the Winona, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area (see the List of Core Based Statistical Areas). I will insert the subsection #Micropolitan Statistical Area into the Winona County article as soon as I can. (I have more than 2000 of these to create.)

County lists

Hi, I just wanted to say great work on List of United States counties and county-equivalents. That's something that WP has needed for a long time, and thank you for your excellent effort on it. I'm sure that if you expanded the lead with information from the county (United States) and County statistics of the United States articles it could become a Featured List. Hi Buaidh. Regarding your recent creation of disambiguation pages, you don't need to create them when there's a primary topic and only one other (ostensibly) ambiguous article. If anything, they just make the second article harder to get to when the same purpose could be served by a hatnote - see at Miami metropolitan area. In cases where a disambiguation page is called for, please make sure you format them correctly according to MOS:DAB, with the primary topic on top. I have two and one half times as many edits as you and correspondingly two and one half times as many mistakes. I'm pretty much a boy scout. If I make a mistake, its usually due to senility rather than subversion.

I try to avoid creating disambiguation pages, but the anti-WP:USPLACE cabal has created a huge mess for those of us who update United States Census Bureau and Office of Management and Budget data. I hope its all worth it to you folks.  Buaidh  21:51, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Haha, I'm totally using that line. Obviously ain't nobody immune to mistakes. As far as the dab pages go, they're actually detrimental when there are only two ambiguous articles and one of them's the primary topic, it's more clicks to get to the second article, which should be avoided. Either way, I've never been convinced that these "micropolitan areas", which are really "Micropolitan Statistical Areas" in the only sources that talk about them, are noteworthy under any name, let alone the made up names you've given them. They appear in virtually no sources outside of the primary sources - government statistics. I'm even less convinced that someone typing in, for instance, "Miami metropolitan area" is looking for a hopelessly obscure statistical entity in Oklahoma, and that we should disregard the common sense arrangement to accommodate those hypothetical readers. Hunting for embedded outlines

Hi Buaidh,

I'm looking for outlines embedded in articles.

I've run across a number of these over the years. One example is the Outline of fencing, which used to be part of the fencing article.

If you know about or spot any structured general topics lists in articles, please let me know (on my talk page).

Another thing you might find are articles that are comprised mostly of lists (without "List of" in the title). If you come across any of these, please report them to me on my talk page. I'd sure like to take a look at them.

Hey Buaidh

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

I created the USAF Sergeant (E4) userbox the way I wanted it for my own use. When you edited it previously, I reverted your edit, which should have given you the idea that I did not want it that way. Yes, if the user box is in someone's personal user space, as is the case with "User:GWFrog" then others should leave it alone. If a user box is under the user profile "User:UBX" then that is the generic userbox user space and you can edit it, but keep in mind it will effect how it looks on other people's user spaces. Eric Cable  |  Talk  20:16, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello again, Buaidh! I've been pretty absent from Wikipedia this year, and upon return discovered that the process for starting pages seems to have changed. In August I created draft text for William A. Reiners (latest addition to the list of Eminent Ecologists) in my Sandbox and I'd like to move it forward as a stub so it can get improvements from others.
